I keep seeing creators trying to get into the coaching business.

But all they can do is teaching.

Coaching is comething else.

Here’s what I mean:

  • Teaching

    • you share information

    • not action-oriented

    • not personalized

  • Mentoring

    • you share information

    • action-oriented, you define next steps

    • personalized

  • Coaching

    • you help the person grow

    • action-oriented, the person defines next steps (not you)

    • highly personalized

Coaching is never about transferring information.

The moment you start telling the person what to do, you become a mentor. Not a coach. In this exact moment, you stop helping them grow.

Why?

Because they never take responsibility for the actions they take. Because they’re suggested by you, not them! True coaching does eactly that - helping people come up with thier own ideas and suggestions about what to do next. That’s how people grow.

Hint: you can use self-coaching to boost your effectiveness.

Here’s how: A classic coaching technique looks like this:

  • you define a very specific goal with your client (or yourself)

  • you only ask questions, never give suggestions or advice.

  • there are only three type of questions:

    • what do you want to achieve

    • what can you do to get there

    • when do you take the first step

  • that’s it! nothing esle!

Do you see any similarities with teching?

Me neither!

You’ll thank me later ;)
