Do you know what’s the speed which our brain uses to process information?

  • Consciousness: a maximum of 60 bits/second

  • Unconsciousness: 11 megabits/second

Here’s what it looks like:

the speed of proceessing information by the brain

Think of it like this:

  • our consciousness = a snail

  • our unconsciousness = a cheetah

Our consciousness is where our rationality lives. Our unconsciousness is where our emotions rule. They are triggered by our feelings, i.e. our sensory system, i.e. everything you:

  • see

  • hear

  • touch

  • smell

  • taste

So:

  • Rationale: slowest slow

  • Emotional influence: fast

  • Physical perception: speed of light

There is no such thing as a rational decision. Before you can say a single word, your unconsciousness has already made the decision in whatever situation you’re facing. Your consciousness is only making up the reasoning behind it. And it’s heavily biased.

Why does this matter?

Almost everything in our lives comes through other people:

  • love

  • money

  • recognition

  • promotion, that new project, that deal, a salary increase…

Communication is how we influence other people. If you master your communication, you’ll own every situation.

Every time you talk to someone, you’re talking to two different people: a rational one and an emotional one. An adult and a kid. Only the kid reacts with the speed of light, while the adult…oh well…

The easiest way to master communication is to talk to a 6th grader. Because that’s what our unconsciousness is like.

So keep it simple.

“If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.”

―Albert Einstein
